Choose the smallest format that delivers the result. Most people start with a course because a course is what everybody talks about, and a course is the heaviest thing on the list to build and the slowest to finish. A guide, a template or a live workshop will teach you what your audience actually wants in a fraction of the time, and you can build the course afterwards knowing it is right.
The question is not which format is best. It is which one fits the result you promise, the audience you have, and the life you want afterwards.
That last part gets forgotten. Every format leaves you with different work once it is live. Some of them keep asking things of you every week, forever. Deciding that up front is easier than discovering it in month four.
A guide or short ebook. Fastest to build, easiest to deliver, lowest price. Good for one clear problem with a clear answer. Excellent first thing to make, because it teaches you whether people want the subject at all.
A workbook or template. You are selling a shortcut, not information. Often more valuable than an ebook and quicker to make. Anything you have built for yourself in a spreadsheet is a candidate.
A live workshop. You show up for two hours and it is over. No editing, no platform, and you get to see people's faces and hear their questions, which is worth more than any market research. The catch is you have to do it again to sell it again, unless you record it.
A self-paced course. Highest perceived value, highest price, by far the most work. Video, structure, a platform, and the tendency to grow arms and legs before it is ever finished. Best built after something smaller has proved the demand.
Coaching or a service. Fastest to earn from, because you can start on Monday with one client. Trades your hours directly for money, which is fine at first and becomes the ceiling later.
A resource library or membership. Ongoing money, and ongoing obligation. You are promising something new every month. Only choose it if you know you will still want to be feeding it in a year.
Take your top two or three formats and give each one a mark out of five on these:
Does it fit the result I promised How long it will take me to build How easy it is to deliver How much support it will need afterwards What I could reasonably charge Whether I would enjoy running it
That last line is not sentimental. It is the one that predicts whether the thing still exists in a year.
Do not build a course if you have not yet sold anything smaller in the same subject. You are guessing, expensively.
Do not build a course if the result can be delivered in ten pages. Padding a good short thing into a bad long thing helps nobody and it shows.
Do not build a course because it is what everyone else in your feed is doing. That is not a reason, it is a mood.
An illustration, not a customer story.
Someone plans an eight module course on organising family paperwork. She estimates three months of work. Four months in it is half built and she is sick of it.
The same knowledge as a twenty page workbook with fillable checklists would have taken two weekends, sold for a modest price, and told her within a month whether anyone wanted it. If they did, the course could follow, built out of the questions the workbook buyers actually asked.
The knowledge was fine. The format was three sizes too big for a first attempt.
Write your promise in one line: I help [person] get [result].
Then paste this:
Here is my promise: [paste]. Here is what I know about the subject: [short description]. For each of these formats, tell me how well it delivers that promise, roughly what it would take to build, and what work it leaves me with afterwards: short guide, workbook or template, live workshop, self-paced course, one to one service. Be blunt about the drawbacks.
Then pick the smallest one that still delivers the result.
Can I change format later?
Yes, and most people do. A guide becomes a workshop becomes a course. Starting small is not a decision you are stuck with.
What should I charge?
Whatever the format sensibly carries at first. A short guide is a low price. Your job in the first version is to find out whether anyone wants it, not to maximise the price.
Do I need video?
No. Plenty of excellent products are text, templates and one live call. Video raises the perceived value and multiplies the work. Add it when you know the content is right.
What if I want to build all of it?
You probably will, eventually. Build one. Sell one. Then build the next thing out of what the first group asked you.

About Louella and Winning Lifestyles Online
I am Louella. I teach AI to women who are changing direction in their working lives, whether that is going back to work, repositioning, or watching their field change underneath them.
I started learning this in January 2023, when a company I was involved with announced they were shelving finished programs and going back to the drawing board because of AI. I decided to understand it rather than wait and see. It changed the direction of my work.
I went to ChatGPT, because it was the one everybody was talking about. I typed in the prompts I had read about somewhere, the way you copy a recipe before you understand the cooking, and it was a good while before I worked out how to use it in a way that actually suited me.
I test these tools myself and report back honestly, including when the answer is that something is not worth your money yet. That is what I write about each month in The AI Lightkeeper, and it is what the courses at Winning Lifestyles Online are built on.
